Discover the rich history of the Costa del Sol living in our villas

Though it may be known in the press for its flash, contemporary bars and clubs, Malaga is in fact one of the world’s oldest cities. It dates back around 2, 800 years. As such, when you step into the Costa del Sol, you step into a region that is very rich in history. In fact, the centre of the city, with its Roman remains and other relics of past cultures, has been designated an ‘open museum’.

Historically curious visitors can simply stroll through the town centre and marvel at the classical architecture that is preserved there. Ancient castles dominate the landscape here, with the most famous being the Moorish Gibralfaro Castle which is situated next to the equally splendid Moorish Alczabah. Museums abound, and in addition to the ‘open’ museum of the city centre itself, tourists can pay a visit to the amazingly baroque ‘Museum of the Holy Week’ for example.

Throughout Andalucia, a similar mix of ancient architecture, fascinating museums, awe inspiring beaches and modern night life can be found, so branching out and exploring other towns and cities is highly recommended.

Exciting festivals and other things to do in the Costa del Sol

Throughout the year, there are plenty of colourful festivals to experience in Andalucia. In Holy Week (Semana Santa), for instance, there are glorious processions and those in Andalucia are said to be the most splendid in all of Spain. If you want to catch some fun all year round festivals, it is a good idea to go to Fuengirola. Here, you can enjoy events such as La Feria de los Pueblos (or The International Fair) every April, whilst every June 24th there is the Festival de San Juan.

The former is a wonderfully vibrant event, where a wide variety of countries (from Colombia to Brasil) are represented with costumes, music, food and dancing. The latter is a night time festival held at the end of the waters. Featuring bonfires, music, dancing and much conviviality, this festival is a treat for the eyes as well as an opportunity to rub shoulders with the locals over a drink. No matter what time of year you visit this part of the world, there will be ceremonies, fairs, festivals and other local events for you to watch – or join in with.
